Sani Stagger Trail Run

November 11

An out and back route, the marathon starts and ends at the Sani Pass Hotel. This is a tough run; the climb to the Sani Pass Summit is 1300 metres and you do that in just over 20 kilometres! By the time you’ve reached half way you only would have done 280 metres and the border post is at 1968 metres above sea level.

Twin Streams comes and goes as does Suicide Bend, Ice Corner and Big Bend Corner. This is definitely a race for the hardened and the brave but if the daunting climb does not take your breath away then the sheer beauty and splendour of the Drakensburg certainly will. Runners taking part in the 21.1km distance will be transported to the top of the pass and will run down again – one of the steepest races in the country so make sure your knees are up to it.

The Sani Stagger has been ranked as a well organised and well presented event and has often been voted as one of the country’s top ten marathons. The Sani Pass is the only motor road that crosses the Natal Drakensberg and the only road between KZN and Lesotho. For runners this is one of Africa’s most unique athletic experiences. The total number of runners for both races is limited to 550 so make sure you get in ahead of time with your entry.
