Sani Lodge Backpackers

Situated right on the famous Sani Pass, just 16 kilometres from the border post with Lesotho, Sani Lodge, pioneered by Simone and Russell Suchet in 1992, is a resort on 30 hectares bordering directly onto the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park and also the oldest Backpackers in KwaZulu Natal.

Accommodation ranges from camp sites with lawn and shade trees ,4 dormitories sleeping 4 people in each, a self-catering group facility sleeping 30 people, 5 standard twins and doubles, 3 en-suite rooms,2 single rooms , 3 four person self-catering cottages and 1 six sleeper self-catering cottage. Amenities on site include fully equipped self-catering kitchens, sitting rooms with open fireplace, modern bathrooms, swimming pool, large central braai area and additional plough disc braais, restaurant, nature trail, free WIFI, bar, complimentary milk from our cows, table tennis, darts, games, library, nature trail, shop with foodstuffs.

Relax at “One of the Best Backpackers away from the big towns in South Africa” ( SA Handbook),mountain bike up Sani Pass, horseride, trail run, walk to mountain waterfalls on our doorstep, hand milk our cows, enjoy sundowners on  the deck veranda with exquisite views of Lesotho mountains, volunteer to teach English at the local rural school and in winter, curl up in front of a log fire in the cosy common room or in the cottages. Our Yoga classes and massage therapy are the perfect complement to your stay.

Sani Lodge is the base for Drakensberg Adventures Tours, started by Russell and Simone in 1997, offering 23 different value for money action packed tours from 1-7 days in the Drakensberg and Lesotho with specialised highly qualified Guides for a full mountain experience that includes pony trekking, guided hikes to caves and Thabana Ntlenyana ( highest peak south of Kilimanjaro) slack packing and rock art.

Sani Lodge is at the start of the famous 5 day Giant’s Cup Trail. We do the bookings for self-guided hikers wanting to camp or stay in caves on behalf of KZN Wildlife as well as issuing day  permits for entry into the Park.
